Background/History:
Even as a child, Carter Spectre was different. He finished people’s sentences
for them. He would often turn in homework assignments before they were even
assigned. And, occasionally, he would see people that no one else could see.
Because of his differences, he was often picked on and bullied by other
children. It was then that he started building his body as well as his mind.
After a couple of years, he was no longer picked on, but still had few friends.
Sadly, his parents wanted to sweep the whole thing under the rug and pretend as
though things were perfectly normal. On the day of his 13th birthday, his
maternal grandmother came to speak with him. This alone was odd as she had been
dead for seven years. At first, Carter was startled and confused, but his
grandmother explained that she had been what the Appalachian people called a ‘Wise
Woman.’ She had always had psychic and healing powers and learned to use them
as these abilities were prized in the society in which she was raised. Carter,
too, had powers and must learn to use them. He must avoid the temptation to use
these powers to enrich himself or harm others as this would surely turn them
against him. He would never be accepted in the modern world however, as science
had turned most people away from the mystic arts. He would work alone and be
ridiculed, but he would be successful. Eventually, the people who counted would
come to believe in him. This was the prophecy his grandmother gave him. Carter’s
parents disowned him when he was 18 after he took his college money and used it
to travel the likes of India, Tibet, Romania, the Caribbean, and Africa,
searching out mystic secrets and learning how to better use the powers he
possessed and acquiring the Amulet of Rham which helps protect him from attack.
During this time, he came to combat evil monsters with supernatural origins. He
found his calling. He was to be a warrior for humanity though humanity
considered him a fraud. Setting up a home in Salem Massachusetts, Carter Spectre
goes wherever the spirits lead him, saving the humanity that rejects him from
terrors they are better off not knowing about.
Personality/Motivations:
Carter is motivated by the desire to save humanity from the forces that
constantly threaten it from beyond the veil.
