Background/History:
Hundreds of years ago, on a world similar to our own, two wizards had a great
rivalry. Trelain was a good wizard, dedicated to the light. His rival, Howrang,
was not evil, but was pragmatic. The two constantly bickered and tried to gain
the position of advisor to their king. Howrang conjured an imp, a very minor
demon, whose lot in life was to annoy people. The imp longed to be evil and
become a demon, but it’s lot was long since cast. It was sent to bedevil and
bother Trelain, but the imp was smarter than most. It learned and it paid
attention to the magics of both it’s victim and it’s summoner. As a gremlin,
the imp had minor telepathy and telekinetic abilities. It learned to expand them
and, then, while probing a dark corner of Howrang’s mind, it discovered a
spell that enabled it to absorb the mental energies of anyone it killed to add
their strength to it’s own. Slowly, he shook off his status as imp and began
murdering people to gain more power. Eventually, none on his home world could
stand against him, but it wasn’t enough. He wanted more power and slew every
living being, but he still wanted more. It discovered alternate dimensions and
began traveling to other worlds and destroying them, growing more and more
powerful. When it came to the earth that Swift and the Protectors of America
lived on, it was so powerful that they didn’t stand a chance against it. Swift
angered the Gremlin, however, so it left him alone to die as the last living
thing on his planet. Chaos and Order in the Protectors Universe saw Gremlin
coming and began aligning heroes to stand against it. They sent Mammoth to
gather aid from other dimensions and he found Swift and brought him to this
dimension. Swift’s information was invaluable to the heroes and the nearly
godlike Gremlin was defeated. It expended so much of it’s power attempting to
defeat the awesome number of heroes that he was left as a shell of it’s former
self. Still, it was quite a powerful mentalist, but little else remained of the
tremendous power he once wielded. Now, it lives for revenge and seeks to find a
way to regain it’s ability to absorb mental energies. To that end, it searched
the globe to find beings who were evil and powerful enough to aid him. It formed
a loosely knit group of freaks and monsters known collectively as the Monster
Society.
Personality/Motivation:
Quite simple, Gremlin is a creature of evil and is full of hate for practically
everything. Topped off with it’s bitterness at being left short and ugly with
only a hint of the power it once held, Gremlin seeks the power to kill universes
once more.
