Background/History:
It all began with his ancestor, Maurice Lebeck, a lawman in New Orleans when it
was still a territory of France. Maurice tracked down the murderer of a young
black girl, but he was a rich, white land owner and the official stance was that
the girl simply did not matter. There was no justice to bring him to. The girl’s
grandmother was a voodoo priestess and Maurice had sworn to get justice for her
granddaughter to keep her from interfering. Maurice was angry and determined to
find someway to keep his oath. Finding no other way, he simply had no other
option than to call the man out as a murderer and challenge him to a duel. The
rich man had no pride and accepted the challenge, but had a hired thug prepared
to shoot, as well. The thug fired early and shot Maurice in the back before the
duel actually began. The doctor tried, but the damage was too great. As Maurice
neared death, the priestess came in and ordered the doctor away. She cast some
sort of spell and he recovered. The next day, Maurice confronted the rich man in
the center of town and demanded satisfaction. The thug had already admitted his
involvement and the man had nothing to lose. The two faced off, the count was
made, and Maurice never moved as the rich man drew and fired. The bullet struck
him in the shoulder, but he did not even flinch. "My turn", he said
and shot the rich man through the heart, killing him instantly. His descendants
followed in his footsteps being lawmen, seemingly blessed by what had happened
to Maurice, miraculously escaping harm and bringing the lawless to justice.
Marshall inherited this blessing in the modern day world of supervillians and
monsters. He donned protective armor, trained himself in many forms of combat,
and fashioned a special sword to become the Duelist. The Attackers were battling
Crypeace and the Duelist joined in to help. Together, they forced the villians
to flee and decided to form a team, the Union of Peace.
Personality/Motivations:
Marshall is a no nonsense, straight to battle type. He is more dedicated to
justice than the law. He provides the far end of the spectrum from Healer who is
a pacifist, but they are in agreement on stopping the forces of evil although is
extremely different ways.
